On July 3rd in Los Angeles, California something extraordinary is happening: the lines between physical and virtual reality are blurring like never before. Fantastic Reality, a mixed-reality 3D live mini-festival, is bringing together VTubers, musicians, DJs, and digital artists to explore the evolving intersection of technology, performance, and imagination.
At the center of this digital-physical crossover is Kou Mariya, the vampire idol VTuber host of the event. Part magical kayfabe, part cultural innovator, Kou Mariya is more than just an avatar—she’s a symbol of the future.
The Rise of VTubers: A New Kind of Star
VTubers—short for virtual YouTubers—are entertainers who use computer-generated avatars in place of their physical appearance. These avatars are often animated in real time using motion capture software that syncs facial expressions and movements with the performer. First made popular by Kizuna AI in 2016, VTubers then surged in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, when online interaction became a dominant form of connection.
With anime aesthetics, playful personas, and livestream-friendly tech, VTubers have created an entirely new genre of performance art—one that combines the charisma of digital influencers with the creativity of cosplay and storytelling. Platforms like Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, and even Japanese sites like Bilibili and Niconico have become home to thousands of VTubers, including Kou Mariya, who began her journey in 2019/2020.
From Virtual to Reality: Fantastic Reality Is a Cultural Milestone
Fantastic Reality isn’t just a concert—it’s a full-fledged mixed-reality experience. With performances from global VTubers like KAF, Ironmouse, Mint Fantôme, JKT48V, CottontailVA, Isaa Corva, Derivakat, and a live band led by VTuber composer StarlightDaryl, the event is a showcase of how the digital world is stepping into real life.
In addition to music, the event features DJ sets by Mono Monet and JOENN, with immersive visuals and mixed-reality projection that put VTuber personalities on the same plane as human performers. The result? A hybrid of storytelling, fandom, and future-forward tech that resonates with fans of both anime and innovation.

We had the chance to sit down (virtually) with Kou Mariya, the charming and mysterious vampire VTuber hosting Fantastic Reality. Known for her vibrant personality, love of idol culture, and dreamy lore, Mariya offered insight into her goals, her creative vision, and what it means to connect with fans across dimensions.
A member of V4Mirai‘s second generation “Petalight”—alongside Mono Monet, Yae Yugiri, and Biscotti—Mariya dreams of building an idol stage that reaches audiences from every world and realm mentioning hopes of possibly even the Oscars one day.

The Future Is Already Here: Real World Tech, Virtual Identities
The success of VTubers like Kou Mariya represents a cultural shift. Just as Waymo and Robotaxi driverless cars roam the streets of San Francisco, Texas, Phoenix, Miami, and Los Angeles; in addition to places like Helsinki Finland, known as the world’s leading smart mobility city with robot buses and drones that fly emergency medical supplies in the city skies; and sidewalk delivery bots like Saymos and Cocos become a common sight, our definition of what is “real” is changing.
VTubers flip the narrative—instead of machines taking over human tasks, they show humans entering the machine and reshaping it with creativity and in some ways, a new style in defining our “ideal physical features.” For some, it’s just a fun way to create an animated character whether it be anime, caricature, cartoon, or animal. While for others, it’s a way to feel comfortable in one’s skin or rather, one’s pixel; truly becoming a person’s alter ego. Events like Fantastic Reality hint at a future where concerts, friendships, identities, and even fame are no longer confined to the physical world.
As AI advances and humanoids one day become more integrated into society, we may soon live in a world where digital avatars and physical humans co-exist, create, and collaborate in public space. In that world, artists like Kou Mariya aren’t anomalies—they’re trendsetters.
